US Preclearance at Calgary Airport

Passengers flying from Calgary to the United States clear US border inspection in Calgary before boarding. This guide covers how preclearance works at YYC, where US flights leave from, what to bring and declare, how early the airlines say to arrive and which hotels suit an early US departure.

What US preclearance is

cbp.gov describes preclearance as US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers stationed at designated foreign airports to inspect travellers before they board flights to the United States. Calgary International Airport is one of nine Canadian airports on CBP’s list, and CBP gives the Calgary operation’s hours as 4:30 am to 8:00 pm. In CBP’s description of the process, passengers drop off checked bags, which are scanned and X-rayed, then use a kiosk and answer a CBP officer’s questions about the trip. On landing in the United States, precleared passengers skip CBP and TSA inspection and go straight to a connecting flight or out of the airport, as domestic passengers do.

Where US flights leave from at YYC

yyc.com calls the E gates the US terminal. Passengers flying to the United States can enter security screening and US customs no more than two hours before their scheduled departure; before that, yyc.com points to the food and drink outlets before security. Pre-Board Screening D and E has a designated queue for members of CATSA’s Verified Traveller program. After customs, the Aspire Lounge Transborder beside the food court in the E gates opens daily from 4:30 am to 7:00 pm, at C$55 plus tax or with Priority Pass, DragonPass or American Express access; the lounges and showers guide lists the other lounges.

What to bring and declare

For air travel to the United States, cbp.gov lists a valid passport for US and Canadian citizens, or a NEXUS card when using a NEXUS kiosk at a designated Canadian airport. CBP requires every traveller entering the United States to declare meats, fruits, vegetables, plants, seeds, soil, animals, and plant and animal products; civil penalties for failing to declare prohibited items can reach US$1,000 for a first non-commercial offence. CBP also tells travellers to declare everything they bring, including souvenirs and food bought at a duty-free shop.

NEXUS members can use Global Entry kiosks when entering the United States, including at preclearance locations (cbp.gov), and yyc.com describes a separate, dedicated line with kiosks for NEXUS and Global Entry members.

How early to arrive

yyc.com recommends arriving two to three hours before departure, especially on long weekends and holidays, to allow time for check-in and bag drop before the two-hour screening window opens. WestJet recommends arriving 2 hours 30 minutes before a US flight; check-in for US and international flights from Calgary closes 75 minutes before departure, and passengers should be at the gate 40 minutes before departure, with the gate closing 15 minutes before. Air Canada closes check-in and bag drop for US flights 60 minutes before departure, and its boarding gate deadline is 30 minutes before departure. Other airlines publish their own limits.

Hotels for an early US departure

CBP preclearance opens at 4:30 am. The Calgary Airport Marriott In-Terminal Hotel and Delta Hotels Calgary Airport In-Terminal are inside the airport and reached on foot. Three shuttle hotels run free shuttles 24 hours a day: Hampton Inn by Hilton Calgary Airport North (2 km), Holiday Inn Express Airport Calgary (8 km) and Sandman Signature Calgary Airport Hotel, where the return time to the airport is reserved at check-in, first come, first served. Courtyard by Marriott Calgary Airport, 9.5 km away, runs its free shuttle hourly from 4:15 am to 11:30 pm, and a reservation is required. Shuttle times at the other hotels are in our early flights guide, and overnight options inside the terminal are in sleeping in Calgary Airport.
