Delays and Cancellations at Calgary Airport: Where to Stay
This guide covers what Canadian rules say about hotel rooms when a flight from Calgary International Airport is delayed or cancelled and which hotels on this site can be reached late at night without a car. The rules come from the Canadian Transportation Agency (otc-cta.gc.ca); hotel facts come from the hotels’ own websites.
What Canada’s rules say about hotel rooms
The Air Passenger Protection Regulations sort flight disruptions into three groups: within the airline’s control, within its control but required for safety, and outside its control. Situations outside its control include bad weather, security incidents, medical emergencies and official orders.
For the first two groups, the standards of treatment apply when a passenger is told of the delay less than 12 hours before the departure time on the original ticket and has waited two hours after that departure time. The airline must then offer reasonable food and drink and a means of communication, free of charge. If the passenger is expected to wait overnight, the airline must offer, free of charge, hotel or other comparable accommodation that is reasonable for the passenger’s location, with transport to it and back to the airport. The airline may limit or refuse a standard of treatment if providing it would further delay the passenger.
Large and small airlines, and disruptions outside their control
A large airline has carried at least two million passengers in each of the two preceding years; all others are small. The size changes the rebooking and compensation rules. For a disruption within its control, a large airline must rebook on its own or a partner’s flight leaving within nine hours of the original departure time, and failing that on any airline within 48 hours; a small airline rebooks on its own or a partner’s next available flight. Compensation for a late arrival within the airline’s control is C$400, C$700 or C$1,000 at a large airline and C$125, C$250 or C$500 at a small airline, for delays of three, six and nine hours or more.
When a disruption is outside the airline’s control, the hotel obligation does not apply. The airline must keep passengers informed and, for a delay of three hours or more or a cancellation, provide alternate travel arrangements or, in some cases, a refund. If an airline does not respond to a written complaint within 30 days, or the passenger is not satisfied, the passenger can complain to the Canadian Transportation Agency.
Getting a room through WestJet or Air Canada
WestJet’s flight interruption pages repeat the 12-hour and two-hour conditions and say hotel and transport may be limited if they would further delay the trip; passengers who pay for eligible expenses themselves can claim them with itemized receipts through WestJet’s “Submit expenses” page. Air Canada’s flight disruption guide says passengers delayed two hours or more may be entitled to hotel accommodation for overnight stays and that it notifies eligible passengers at the gate or by email.
